| The World Figure 8 Championship originated circa 1964 in Islip, New York. Many people remember the days when ABC would broadcast this event on the Wide World of Sports. Drivers came from all over the country to test themselves against the best of the local cross-over warriors. Unfortunately, the historic Islip Speedway would eventually close its gates in 1984. Consequently another New York track, Riverhead Raceway, attempted to run its own version of a World Figure 8 race until 1996. Throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's the Indianapolis Speedrome held claim to be the original home of figure 8 racing. That fact rarely disputed, few could argue that the World Championship rightfully belonged at the Speedrome. The Speedrome began to hold a unique national 3 hour endurance event in 1977. An event that made it possible for a driver to win the race without actually starting the race. This race would eventually be tagged as the undisputed World Figure 8 Championship. Through the years, this event has attracted more than 250,000 racing fans and hundred's of drivers from around the nation vying for the largest payout in figure 8 racing. The speedrome has long been the breeding ground for outlaw style figure 8 racing and has been an important catalyst for the evolution of figure 8 racing technology. We pay tribute below to all of the tracks and all of the men that have helped solidify World Figure 8 Championship racing as an important niche of Saturday night stock car racing for the past 40 years. |
